NGĀTI KAHUNGUNU IWI INCORPORATED AGM PĀ SPORTS REPORT November 2024 – Ruth Wong
The 18th Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated AGM Pā Sports 2024 was a great success with whānau traveling from as far as Australia to be a part of this annual whānau gathering. This event included a number of moving parts that needed attention. PĀ SPORTS Over 50 marae teams participated in the 8 sporting codes that included Kiddies sports, Touch Rugby, Ki O Rahi, Volleyball, Netball, Basketball, Pickleball and Tug of War. 6 paired teams entered into the Euchre competition played inside the Splash Planet complex in the shaded café area. Kaumātua brothers in law Kaupa Teariki and Asovale Tuimaseve enjoyed being able to team together.
This whole ordeal could run a lot more smoothly if we could secure our coordinators earlier. Funding or the lack of it is always the issue that slows our communication. Event team leads Danielle Keil and Te Rangi Huata started planning the AGM Pā Sports day in June this year, however funds were not confirmed until September which caused a time issue for communication, however our Smart Services team were able to pull together the parts of planning this event for it to continue as it did.
PLANNING AND TIMING The past years financial strain has meant that the funds for Benefits to Members has had to take a backseat and this past year we have only just been able to reinstate some activities using funds from within the tari. Last years AGM Pā Sports held at Splash Planet was 100 percent sponsored by the Hastings District Council. This year, NKII was able to pay the highly subsidized cost of $45,000 for the 3,000 wristbands. In the past we have had to share the venue with the public, and we have filled Splash Planet with the same amount of iwi members selling around 3,000 bands. Since 2004, the maximum you can fit in the venue is now 3,000. This years event was wonderful and it was nice to see a full complex without being chocked at the same time.
WORKING WITH HASTINGS DISTRICT COUNCIL Hastings District Council did a makeover of Splash Planet in 2024. Evidently last year we were able to meet the new managers of the complex after working with the former managers for 16 years. Last year there were hiccups along the way, needless to say our new relationship meant that we had to be more patient in the way we do things. We are pleased to say that this years event was less strained and we have a better relationship. The feeling must be neutral because staff couldn’t do enough to ensure the event ran smoothly.
A
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated AGM was held in the Splash Planet Conference room and started at 9am with around 20 iwi members and four Board members, Chairman Bayden Barber, Deputy Chairman Thompson Hokianga of Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga, Nigel How of Ngāti Kahungunu Te Wairoa Taiwhenua, and Jenny Smith of Tamatea Taiwhenua. Apologies were received from Kaumātua Haami Hilton, Northern Taurahere representative Eruera Beattie, and Te Whanganui-ā-Orotu Taiwhenua Hori Reti due to the tangihanga of Aunty Maisey Whaitiri. Kahungunu ki Tamaki-nui-ā-Rua representative Hayden Hape, Kahungunu ki Wairarapa representative Melissa Ihaka and Southern Taurahere representative Brian Ruawai-Hamilton were able to join online to be a part of the meeting ensuring the quorum was sufficient to proceed. The attendance was down compared to last years AGM that exceeded 100 participants. Last years no show of an end of year Financials saw added interest from the floor, involving accusations pitched toward iwi leaders surrounding accountability and the negative use of iwi money. The iwi held its Special General Meeting to present the 2022-2023 financials in September this year which was a shocking 10 months overdue. NKII Board Chairman Bayden Barber mentioned his relief when signing off this years financials at their Board hui only the day before this years AGM. This is the 3rd year in a row where a breach of the iwi’s constitution to make available the full financials 21 days out from the AGM. Bayden mentioned in his report that although the financials were late, he was pleased they could be presented at the hui.As part of Bayden’s Chairman Report he invited Chief Executive Chrissie Hape to present some of the great work that has taken place throughout the year. Chrissie spoke about the extraordinary year it has been in particular the change in government. The relationship is still strong and we are able to continue working on behalf of our whānau. Te Puni Kōkiri, Corrections, Oranga Tamariki are some government partnerships we have. Te Kura, Te Ara Mātua, Te Ao Mārama, the work being done by our Housing team and our environmental gurus were mentioned in Chrissies acknowledgement of her team. She gave specific acknowledgement to the Smart Services team and in particular referred to them as the spine of the iwi. Her sentiments were humbly received from her team. The staff ended Chrissie’s korero with Tommy Taurima’s Kotiro Maori E. This level of detail was received well by attendees of the hui. It’s always positive to report with open korero, good will, and waiata. KAI HAU KAI This year we had Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Wānanga Whare Tāpere prepare our BBQ lunches – 3000 in total. Deliveries began at 11.30am and there was plenty. If anything the communication of the availability of lunches wasn’t made early enough. Whānau came with their own kai.
DAY TIME SHOW AND KARAOKE Traci Tuimaseve was engaged to run the front of house with games, music and karaoke competition. With Traci’s experience with the Flaxmere Night Market and his preparation of online games and audience participation, Traci was able to keep the children well enthused. The Karaoke competition also brought a great opportunity to bring our very talented iwi to the stage. Children as young as 4 years old participated. SUN PROTECTION Although it was meant to be cloudy with slight rain, it was a beautiful blue sky day. The sun was lovely, however one preferred the shady areas if you were not wet from the very cool Splash Planet pool s. The iwi provided Sunscreen poles through Cancer HB. We had four poles in total.

WHANAUNGATANGA KEY COMPONENT
By Shane Hurndell
Yes things were competitive but whanaungatanga was the main theme as sports returned to the agenda at Ngati Kahungunu's 18th annual AGM and Pa Sports Day on Saturday.
The Splash Planet-hosted event attracted thousands of participants representing numerous marae from throughout the Kahungunu rohe. It was the first time sports had been included since 2021 as the iwi had been hit by tough financial times in 2022 and '23.
"This was a beautiful day. We had an awesome AGM where we announced a $7 million surplus.
"We were able to bring sports back after a couple of tough years and there was plenty of positive feedback from everyone which shows all our systems are working," a jubilant iwi chairman Bayden Barber explained.
Barber, 51, got to play alongside four of his sons in the Waimarama team which beat Tangoio 48-39 in the final of the six-team basketball competition. Two of them, Kaea and Mana, were particularly prominent,
"Their grandmother was also on the bench. Because of the AGM I could only play in the final and I managed 12 points and a couple of rebounds," Barber recalled.
Waimarama were also triumphant in the 11-team volleyball competition and completed an unbeaten run with a 32-27 victory over the Waipatu Warriors in the final.
Volleyball Hawke's Bay stalwart Jo Lucas impressed with her leadership for Waimarama. For the Warriors 52-year-old Matt Marsh displayed the benefits of his vast experience while eight-year-old Noah Whaitiri proved he has a big future in the code.
Earlier in the day Marsh was on the Waipatu touch team's roster as they beat Taraia 8-3 in the final of their eight-team competition.
"It was a whanau effort and we were fortunate to have four players who had played in last weekend's Fijian Cup tournament. Today was another one of those finals between the Cardies and the Bartletts and the Bartletts came out on top," Marsh recalled.
Tamaki nui-a-Rua retained the Ki-o-Rahi title they won in 2021 with three wins and a loss in their five-team competition. Their key player, Kaia Walker-Waitoa, captured the award for the Most Outstanding Female.
"We're all whanau and we know how each other plays. We've played together for seven years and we've just finished our weekly module competition back in Dannevirke," Walker-Waitoa explained.
"Everybody will be back next year to try and retain our title," she added.
Second place went to a Waimarama team which boasted Wiremu Manaena and Te Paeru M
akea-Karaitiana as their influential players.
Omahu's Luc Harmer took home the award for the Most Outstanding Male player. He played alongside his two daughters, Te Hineariki and Te Awhiorangi Araia-Harmer.
Te Whatuiapiti travelled home with the Ki-o-Rahi Sportsmanship award.
Tangoio took out the 12-team Mixed Netball competition for the first time with three wins and a draw, Second placed Tamaki nui-a-Rua posted three wins and a loss.
Te Ohomairangi and Ahmali-Rose Ratima along with Evanaleeigh and Equalizae Coller were all prominent for Tangoio.
Pickleball was introduced for the first time and eight teams representing six marae participated. The interest in this code exceeded expectations and it will be included again next year.
First place went to the unbeaten Te Aranga Marae team of Cynthia, Teina and Meliano Fameitau and Kylie Stevens.
Second place went to Nuhaka's Kahungunu Marae team of Paddy Owen, Hine Flood, Austin King and Waaka Edwards.
Barber pointed out he heard calls during the day for the reintroduction of the Ngati Kahungunu Sports Awards function.
"We've got so many talented sports people across all codes and our young people need to see the pathways available to them."
This function was last held in 2015 and current Warriors rugby league team captain Tohu Harris and former All Blacks rugby halfback Aaron Smith were named joint winners of the premier award.
