Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Mātauranga Symposium
Celebrating Kotahitanga

Discover the power of Kotahitanga in education

In 2019-2020 Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated (NKII) undertook a review of it’s  Mātauranga/Education Strategy. The project was led by educational specialists Tawehi Munro and Whare Isaac-Sharland. In their refresh exercise, they found that although slight changes were made over time, the state of the education system was still failing Māori. A very thorough process took place which included assessing strategic objectives, priorities, goals and aspirations to further grow the holistic wellbeing for the future of Kahungunu. The following six priorities were highlighted.

  1. Priority One: Te Tiriti o Waitangi

  2. Priority Two: Te Reo me ōna Tikanga

  3. Priority Three: Te Mātauranga

  4. Priority Four: Te Whanaungatanga

  5. Priority Five: Te Rangatiratanga

  6. Priority Six: Tipuria te Aroha

Each Priority is likened to an aho or thread, woven together alongside the Strategic Objectives creating a robust and vigorous whāriki from which the Goals and Recommendations can better flourish, as well as fulfil the following:

  • Further advance education aspirations for all Māori learners living throughout Kahungunu; and taurahere Kahungunu whānau living beyond Kahungunu,

  • Better enable our tamariki mokopuna and whānau to remain within education, as well as assure an enjoyable education journey for them,

  • Further redress the persisting impacts of colonisation which continues to plague Māori, and

  • Demonstrate, by Kahungunu for Kahungunu, educational pathways to better address educational issues.

This year Tawehi and Whare introduced ‘Te Ao Mārama – Everything Mātauranga Podcast’. This links directly to the six priorities.

"Te Ao Mārama: Everything Mātauranga" is a podcast aimed at bridging gaps and nurturing understanding by sharing the rich tapestry of knowledge, wisdom, and perspectives from the Ngāti Kahungunu community. Rooted in the ethos of Mātauranga and cultural revitalisation, this podcast endeavours to foster meaningful connections through authentic conversations with experts and community leaders. This platform has been a good pre-requisite for a new event that will take place in the new year called, the Ngāti Kahungunu Mātauranga Symposium.

The Ngāti Kahungunu Mātauranga Symposium is two fold.

On Thursday 30 January a special awards dinner will take place, where whānau members will be acknowledged for their hard work in the following 8 categories:

  1. Honorary Lifetime Achievement

  2. Rangatiratanga

  3. Mātauranga

  4. Te Reo me Tikanga

  5. Whakaputanga me Tiriti o Waitangiii

  6. Tipuria te Aroha

  7. Whakawhanaungatanga

  8. Kahungunu Champion

On Friday 31 January 9-4.30pm the Mātauranga Symposium will take place in Hastings at the Toitoi Event Centre.
