Toitū Te Tiriti Hikoi 10-19 November 2024
Background Information
Toitū Te Tiriti is organising a Hīkoi mo Te Tiriti on 10-19 November starting in the North at Te Rerenga Wairua and ending at the Parliament Buildings in Wellington.
Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is fully supportive of this Hikoi.
The Coalition Government set a fire under iwi Māori when its intentions were to review Te Tiriti o Waitangi and retract numerous policy settings designed to improve Māori outcomes. This prompted Ngāti Kahungunu to gather and discuss how we can work through these challenging times together. In December 2023, a Hui-ā-Iwi took place at Waimarama Marae to allow our people to share their concerns. Together we attended the Hui-ā-Motu called by the late Kiingi Tuheitia where the nation was able to come together and unite our thoughts and collectivise our intentions. We have continued to gather as an iwi and support national hui to address our concerns. In May we hosted a National Hui Taumata at Omahu Marae to continue our call to action. Recently we attended another National Hui hosted by Ngai Tahu. We continue to work through these challenging times together, unitedly supporting the Kaupapa to uphold Te Whakapuatanga I ngā Mana Tika a Ngāti Kahungunu, our Declaration of Ngāti Kahungunu Rights. Our mission is to enhance the mana and wellbeing of Ngāti Kahungunu. We continue to support this Kaupapa in a positive way.
When the new conservative government took office in December 2023, thousands rallied across Aotearoa in protests called by Te Pāti Māori (The Māori Party). Rally organisers called the movement “Toitū te Tiriti”, referring to the need to uphold and enhance Te Tiriti o Waitangi against the new government’s racist attacks. Organisers invited people of all races to participate.
Toitū Te Tiriti is a movement that is Tūpuna inspired, Tiriti-based, Mana Motuhake driven and Mokopuna focussed. It is open for anyone to be part of, whether Māori or non-Māori. It's about learning together, supporting each other, getting out and talking about what it means to be Māori and how we must continue to thrive no matter what government is in leadership. We will exert our Mana Motuhake, Self Determination to maintain our values and uphold the late Kiingi Tuheitia’s remembered words from his National Challenge, to ‘Be Māori All Day Every Day’.
