The whānau Huata announce the sudden passing of dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and Uncle Tama Tūranga Huata, 64 years at his home in Meeanee in the early hours of Wednesday 11 February 2015 surrounded by his close whānau.
Tama was the third son of the late Canon Wī Te Tau Huata and Ringahora Hēni Ngākai Ybelle Tomoana, born 15.4.1950. Tama is survived by his life-long soul mate Pukepuke Tangiora (Tangi) and children Ellison Mihiroa Tomoana, Narelle Karanema and Ariki Tama Tūranga Huata. He is the loved koro of Totara, Journey, the late Eraihia and Heiani. Dearly loved brother of the late Paraire Henare Tomoana Huata, the late Hemi Pītiti Huata, Ngātai Huata, Tama Te Rangi Raana Huata, Hinemanuhiri Huata Vercoe, Te Rau Aroha Huata Crowchild, Heke-Tūroa Rōpine Huata and Wī Te Tau Kahutāpere Huata.
Tama was the founder of the Kahurangi Māori Dance Theatre which was at the forefront of the renaissance of Māori performing arts in the early 1980s. The formation of Kahurangi was the embodiment of Tama’s vision to present Māori performing arts in a dynamic and contemporary manner. The touring teams have travelled the world promoting cultural understanding and inviting audiences to participate in their programmes. Kahurangi is a New Zealand treasure. Tama was the founder of the Takitimu Trust in 1984, followed by the formation of Te Wānanga Whare Tapere o Takitimu which was the first institution to offer a degree course in the traditional Māori performing arts in 1991. He holds the mantle of the Tohunga Huarewa o Te Whare Pūkenga.
Tama was the founder of the Waiata Māori Music Awards, an annual event that celebrates leadership and achievement of Māori musicians. Tama was the leader of the Takitimu Festival, a tri-ennial event that celebrates the rich history of the Takitimu waka. Tama was the Chaiperson of the Ngāti Kahungunu Rūnanga Arts and Culture Board which leads the performing arts wing of Ngāti Kahungunu initiatives and is also leading the Te Matatini 2017 event which is being hosted in Ngāti Kahungunu. Tama was the inaugural chairperson of the Te Matatini Society Inc. and under the guidance of Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu, lead the re-vamping of the organization to what it is now known as Te Matatini. Tama was a member of the Ngāti Kahungunu Taumata alongside Dr. Pita Sharples, Professor Piri Sciascia and Dr. Rangimārie Turuki Pere, who offer cultural direction for Ngāti Kahungunu iwi. Tama also headed the Ngā Marae o Heretaunga organization and recently spear-headed the Ngā Pou o Heretaunga project. He holds the Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit and is internationally recognized as an expert in indigenous arts.
Tama will arrive at Waipatu Marae at 9am on Thursday 12 Feb 2015. He will travel to Mihiroa Marae, Pakipaki early on Friday 13 Feb 2015 where he will lay until his final service at 11am on Sunday 15 Feb 2015 where he will be laid to rest at Whenuakura Urupā, Pakipaki.
